Not only was Chevy competing with FOMOCO and MOPAR for customers for a big motor in a big car (that moonshiners and NASCAR liked), but it was competing with itself since the big block could be had in the Nova, Camaro, and the Chevelle as well as the bigger and heavier Impala body. There wasn't a break out on the 1967 production run as to who got the 425 horse 427 and who got the 385 horse oval port heads with a hydraulic cam. There were a 6,357 SS 427 cars sold all three years combined so it is one of the rarest cars that GM made.
This was the last year the SS 427 was offered (the 454 came out in 1970 and there were no SS 454 Impalas made). The production numbers decreased in 1968 falling to 1,778 with 568 of them being the L-72 424 horsepower 427 engine, but jumped again in 1969 to 2,455 units sold with 546 getting the L-72 engine. The SS427 Impala was a little known option that no sales manager would let on his lot unless it came with a prepaid in full bill of sale as he didn't think the average little old lady would buy it if ordered on spec (probably explains why the little old lady from Pasadena bought a red Hemi power Mopar Coranet instead).
Production numbers for the SS427 Impala were 2,124 in 1967.
